Justice Thurgood Marshall Lecture

About

An annual lecture honoring Justice Thurgood Marshall will be held at the Thurgood Marshall Amenity Center in the renovated P.S. 103 building in Baltimore. Justice Marshall – who was born in Baltimore in 1908 – attended P.S. 103 as a child. The acquisition and renovation of P.S. 103 is led by Dr. Alvin C. Hathaway Sr., President and CEO, Beloved Community Services Corporation.

Each annual lecture will be delivered by a distinguished lawyer, judge, or scholar on a topic related to the legal and social justice issues relevant to Justice Marshall’s career. As examples, the lectures might focus on Justice Marshall’s views on the death penalty, or his role in representing innocent defendants, or his significant opinions as a Justice on the United States Supreme Court. There are many valuable topics appropriate for honoring Justice Marshall.

The lecturers will be invited by a select committee of Maryland retired judges and legal scholars at Maryland’s law schools and Howard University School of Law. Each lecturer will be given an honorarium, plus travel and lodging expenses. A dinner will be held for invited guests to meet the lecturer the evening before or the evening of the lecture.

The Justice Thurgood Marshall Lectures will be supported by a dedicated endowment, raised by contributions, and held in trust by a sound financial sponsor.

The inaugural lecture featured the 82nd United States Attorney General, Eric H. Holder, Jr.
